A label is a published state of knowledge, not a permanent verdict. Changes can correct a maker, narrow a date, add provenance, update a cultural name or explain an earlier attribution.
Attribution expresses confidence
A named maker, “attributed to,” a workshop name and “unknown” are not interchangeable. Each phrase indicates a different evidentiary position.
Circa keeps dates honest
“Circa” means approximately. A range can be more truthful than a single year when records or scientific dating do not support precision.
Good corrections remain visible
Editors should date substantive updates, explain what changed and preserve the source trail. Our corrections route provides a public procedure.
